Want to improve your portrait painting? In this lesson I show you my process for painting a portrait, starting from sketching the basic shapes of the portrait to adding color and detail. Through the painting process, I will also show how to easily mix skin tones using a limited palette. The lesson includes over 1 hour 15 minutes of painting demonstration plus instruction. The class is suitable for all skill levels, however some drawing and color mixing practice is recommended.

I use regular oil paint for the demonstration, however many of the techniques can be adapted to water-based oils, acrylics, or acrylic gouache. I will also be working with a limited palette of black, white, red, and yellow (a "Zorn" palette) that allows for simple color mixing. I do not use any toxic solvents or mediums during the painting process, so it is suitable for students painting at home or who are sensitive to these substances. A full overview of supplies is included at the beginning of the lesson.
